Mulei From Kenya, Africa
While trying to avoid a big parade in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, I noticed this old man sitting behind a hut carving animal faces into small pieces of wood. Now, I’ve been to Animal Kingdom probably a hundred times, and I have never seen people selling woodcarvings. I was on the way to try and catch a show on the other side of the park, but I missed the show because I was so intrigued with watching this man so laser focused on his carvings…
I obviously wanted to capture a photo of him, but it was so hard deciding how I wanted to set up the composition. I wanted to encapsulate the cool “feeling” of this scene into one single photograph. You will notice in the photo that I only captured his hands. As a photographer, you have to think about how you are going to convey emotion to your viewers. Sure, I could have taken a wide angle shot of the whole scene, but I wanted to create a visual representation of the emotion and excitement that I was feeling while watching him work his craft. Think about that next time you take a photo 🙂
In conclusion, I approached him and made some small talk after taking the photo of his hands. I found out that his name is Mulei, he is obsessed with tigers like me, and he started woodcarving with his father over 40 years ago when he was a child growing up in Kenya, Africa. It was a cool moment in time to be a part of, and I even walked away with a cool photo!
